The PC5500 is the updated version of the Komatsu H455S, a machine that has proven itself in the field for reliability, high production and low operation costs compared to rival machines in its class. The PC5500 is the second-largest unit in Komatsu's hydraulic mining shovel range - the largest being the 720 t PC8000-1 unit, successor to the H655S.
The main advantages the hydraulic shovel has over a rope shovel in its application is that it is capable of digging and loading more selectively, it is more capable of loading lower faces and has the ability to maintain a level floor.
